SABESP: Largest wastewater treatment facility in the region
The Companhia de Saneamento do Estado de São Paulo (Sabesp) approached the IDB in 2008 to help build the largest wastewater treatment facility in Latin America.
The $250 A/B long-term financing to Sabesp would help expand the percentage of households connected to the company’s sewage system, increase sewage treatment, and increase operating efficiency and reduce water losses.
Since 2008, the IDB has worked in partnership with Sabesp to monitor and measure the project’s progress. To date, the project has achieved:
- Nearly 80% of Sao Paulo’s population served by Sabesp received wastewater treatment, up from 67% at the start of the project
- 1 million people received water treatment
- 1.5 million people received wastewater collection services
- 3.5 million people had their wastewater treated
