How it works

Small loans can produce significant returns.

The IDB and NDF partnered to provide large and midsized companies with financial and technical assistance to adopt energy efficiency programs.

The three options include:

Energy Efficiency Finance Facility
(Loans and technical assistance)

  • The $50 million Facility helps companies to make investments in energy efficiency and self-supply renewable energy projects that will reduce energy costs and greenhouse gas emissions.
  • Focuses on projects with potential for high financial returns, including increasingly economical technologies such as smart-grid, advanced lighting and solar or biomass power.
  • The Facility also provides assistance grants related to project identification and feasibility and engineering studies.

NDF Guarantee Fund
(Concessional)

  • The $10 million energy efficiency guarantee fund provides up to 25% guarantees to IDB loans for energy efficiency and self-supply renewable energy projects.
  • These guarantees will enhance the credit profile and reduce the price of the loans as necessary to make projects viable.
  • NDF eligible countries: Central America, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Bolivia.

Energy Audits
(Technical assistance)

  • To help companies increase their energy efficiency and utilize renewable energy, the IDB provides energy audits assessments and investment-grade engineering feasibility studies for energy efficiency and small-scale renewable energy projects.
  • NDF eligible countries: Central America, Colombia, Dominican Republic, Jamaica and Bolivia.
